New Hampshire Towns to Receive More Money From PFAS Settlements

By ยท 2 days ago

New Hampshire towns are in line for a larger share of PFAS settlement money, according to a report published Tuesday, May 27, by the New Hampshire Bulletin.

PFAS โ€” per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances โ€” are synthetic chemicals linked to cancer and other health problems. They’ve turned up in drinking water supplies across the state, with some communities spending years and millions of dollars on filtration systems and testing.

Settlements with PFAS manufacturers have generated pools of money that states and municipalities can draw on to cover those costs. The Bulletin’s report indicates New Hampshire communities will have access to more of those funds โ€” though the specific dollar amounts, which towns qualify, and how they can apply weren’t detailed in the initial report.

The contamination problem isn’t new here. Several New Hampshire communities have dealt with tainted wells and municipal water supplies tied to military bases, industrial sites, and firefighting foam used at airports. Those cleanup efforts have run into the millions, and local officials have long argued state and federal settlement dollars don’t stretch far enough.

Whether the additional funding comes from an existing settlement agreement or a newly finalized deal hasn’t been confirmed. The New Hampshire Bulletin hadn’t published application deadlines or eligibility criteria as of Tuesday afternoon.
