Brazil Reports 2 Possible Ebola Cases as Congo Outbreak Continues

By ยท 2 months ago

Brazil is investigating two possible Ebola cases, health authorities confirmed Saturday, May 31, as the World Health Organization reported five patients in Congo have recovered from the disease.

The WHO said those five recoveries show that surviving Ebola is possible โ€” even without approved treatments or vaccines in place. The announcement came as a new treatment center opened in eastern Congo, where the current outbreak has been concentrated.

Brazil’s two suspected cases haven’t been confirmed. No additional details about the patients were immediately available, and the WHO hadn’t publicly linked the Brazilian cases to the Congo outbreak by the time of the report.

The Congo outbreak has drawn sustained attention from global health agencies. Ebola kills a significant share of those infected, and the absence of widely approved treatments makes each recovery notable. The WHO’s five-case finding doesn’t change the overall picture of how dangerous the disease remains, but the agency said the cases demonstrate that outcomes aren’t uniformly fatal.

No travel advisories specific to Brazil had been issued as of Saturday, and the investigation into the two potential Brazilian patients was still ongoing.
