Crumbl’s 840-Calorie Dirty Soda Sparks Online Fight Over Sugar Limits

By · 1 month ago

Crumbl, the Utah-founded bakery chain known for oversized cookies, is taking heat on social media over a newly added beverage — a dirty soda called Crazy Cousins that clocks in at 840 calories and 186 grams of sugar per serving.

That sugar count is more than six times the 30-gram daily intake recommended for an average adult. One viral video drew the comparison differently: it’s roughly the equivalent of five cans of full-sugar Coca-Cola or 19 Krispy Kreme donuts in a single drink.

Dirty sodas — carbonated soft drinks mixed with creamers, flavor syrups, fruit juice, or other add-ins — originated in Utah and spread nationally through social media. Crumbl’s line of them runs 32 ounces per order. Depending on the base soda, syrups, and heavy cream chosen, the chain’s standard dirty soda options range from 300 to 700 calories and 50 to 150 grams of sugar. Crazy Cousins sits well above that band; it combines Red Bull, Mountain Dew, pineapple, strawberry puree, and coconut cream, according to Crumbl’s posted nutrition facts.

The backlash online split almost immediately into two camps. Some commenters said the government — including HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose name came up repeatedly — should step in. “This crap doesn’t just affect your body; it negatively affects your mind, too,” one X user wrote. “Big corporations are trying to kill us … out in the open, unchallenged.” Another commenter questioned whether it was acceptable for a company to “take advantage of and destroy the health” of people who, in their words, may not have the capacity to make informed health choices — citing roughly 5 percent of the U.S. population.

Others pushed back hard on that framing. “Here’s an idea … don’t buy it and move on with your life,” one X user wrote. “Nobody is forcing people to eat or drink their stuff,” said another. “Should the government force us to eat or drink exactly what they want us to? It’s a slippery slope.”

Crumbl hasn’t publicly responded to the criticism. Whether the chain plans to adjust the Crazy Cousins recipe or pull it from the menu isn’t known.
