Nine people are dead — among them Lebanese army officers — after Israeli airstrikes hit a vehicle following a ceasefire deal between the two countries, according to NPR.
The Israeli military confirmed it struck the vehicle. It didn’t deny the timing. The incident is under review, the military said, offering no further detail Friday, June 6.
Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun didn’t hold back. He called the strike “a flagrant violation to Lebanese sovereignty and international law” — language that signals Beirut isn’t treating this as a misunderstanding.
Killing soldiers from the Lebanese Armed Forces carries weight beyond the body count. The Lebanese army has long been seen by Western governments, including the United States, as a stabilizing institution — one that ceasefire arrangements are specifically designed to strengthen. Striking its officers, whatever the circumstances, complicates that framing.
The Israeli military’s review is ongoing. No findings have been released.
