As Supreme Court expands Trump’s immigration power, experts warn of steeper U.S. population decline

By ยท 3 weeks ago

The United States was already on a slow demographic slide before the Supreme Court weighed in. Now, some experts say the country’s population troubles could get worse โ€” and faster.

The high court confirmed President Trump’s authority to deport hundreds of thousands of foreign migrants who had been living in the U.S. under temporary protections. The ruling hands the administration broad power to carry out large-scale removals that had been tied up in legal challenges.

The population concern

Demographers had been tracking a troubling trend even before the ruling: an aging American population inching toward natural decline. Birth rates have fallen. The workforce is shrinking relative to the number of retirees. Immigration had been one of the few things keeping net population numbers from going negative.

That cushion may now be thinner. Experts warn that removing hundreds of thousands of working-age migrants โ€” many of them in their 20s, 30s, and 40s โ€” could pull the floor out from under projections that assumed continued immigration would offset low birth rates.

The concern isn’t just abstract math. A shrinking population means fewer workers paying into Social Security and Medicare, fewer people filling jobs in agriculture, construction, and health care, and less consumer spending driving local economies. Those pressures were building before June 27, 2026. The court’s decision adds a new variable.

Temporary Protected Status โ€” the program at the center of the legal fight โ€” had shielded migrants from countries including Venezuela, Haiti, and El Salvador from deportation while their home countries faced crises. Hundreds of thousands of people held that status. Their fate is now squarely in the administration’s hands.

Whether the administration will move quickly to begin mass deportations under the expanded authority, or whether legal challenges in lower courts will slow the process, hasn’t been settled. The ruling confirmed the power exists. How and when it gets used is still an open question.
