Guo Wengui โ the Chinese billionaire who told followers he’d come to the United States to bring down the Chinese Communist Party โ was sentenced Monday, June 30, 2026, to 30 years in federal prison after a fraud conviction.
The sentencing judge said Guo didn’t spend investor money fighting Beijing. He spent it on himself.
Guo had cast his fundraising as a political crusade. Prosecutors argued it was a scheme โ one that diverted money from investors to bankroll Guo’s own lavish lifestyle. The jury agreed.
Thirty years. For a man who built his American profile on anti-CCP rhetoric, it’s a long way down.
Guo, also known as Miles Guo and Ho Wan Kwok, had cultivated a large online following in the United States and abroad, presenting himself as a dissident exile with inside knowledge of Communist Party corruption. That image became central to his fundraising pitch.
It didn’t hold up in court.
The judge’s characterization at sentencing was blunt: Guo diverted investor funds to live lavishly rather than pursue any political mission. The court didn’t buy the dissident framing as a defense.
Whether any defrauded investors will recover their money isn’t clear from court records available at sentencing.
