SCOTUS upholds birthright citizenship. And, key results from Colorado’s primaries

By ยท 2 weeks ago

The Supreme Court closed out its term Tuesday, July 1, with a ruling that upheld birthright citizenship on constitutional grounds โ€” ending a legal challenge that had drawn national attention since the start of the year.

The decision came on the final day of the court’s session. No dissent count or vote tally was immediately available.

Out of Colorado, a Democratic socialist won the Democratic primary for a U.S. House seat covering Denver. The win sets that candidate up against the Republican nominee in November โ€” though the general election matchup hasn’t yet been formally confirmed by state officials.

The two results landed on the same day, though they came out of entirely separate proceedings. The birthright citizenship case had challenged the longstanding interpretation of the 14th Amendment, which grants citizenship to nearly all persons born on U.S. soil. The court’s ruling leaves that interpretation intact.

What happens next in the Colorado race, including who the Republican nominee will face in the fall, wasn’t immediately clear.
