Hartford marked the nation’s 250th birthday Wednesday, July 2, with a public reading of the Declaration of Independence โ one of the foundational documents that launched the country in 1776.
The event tied into nationwide commemorations of the semiseptennial. The Declaration, adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, runs roughly 1,320 words and names 56 signatories. Public readings have long been a civic tradition on the days surrounding Independence Day.
Hartford’s role wasn’t incidental. Connecticut was among the original 13 colonies, and the state contributed four signatories to the Declaration: Roger Sherman, Samuel Huntington, William Williams, and Oliver Wolcott. Their names appear near the bottom of the document.
The full text of the Declaration โ including its grievances against King George III โ takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes to read aloud, depending on the pace. Whether Wednesday’s Hartford reading included remarks, musical performances, or other programming wasn’t immediately available.
