What’s known so far
Details remain thin. NPR didn’t specify what time the shooting occurred, whether the suspects died by their own hand or were killed by law enforcement, or how the victims and suspects were connected โ if they were at all. The circumstances that led two armed individuals to the Islamic Center of San Diego aren’t clear.
No information about additional injuries has been made public. It’s also unclear whether anyone else was inside the center during the attack.
The Islamic Center of San Diego serves as a mosque and community gathering place in California’s second-largest city. A shooting there carries echoes of past attacks on houses of worship across the country โ including the 2019 shooting at a synagogue in the nearby city of Poway, where one worshiper died and three others were wounded.
Authorities haven’t said whether they’re treating Sunday’s attack as a hate crime. That question โ along with the identities of all five dead and any link between them โ hasn’t been answered publicly yet.
