Gold Star Family license plates can now be personalized at no cost in Wisconsin

By ยท 2 weeks ago

Wisconsin families who lost a loved one in military service can now put a personal touch on their Gold Star Family license plates โ€” and it won’t cost them anything extra.

The state has changed its policy to allow personalization of Gold Star Family plates at no charge, a benefit that hadn’t previously been available without a fee. The change took effect July 1, 2026.

Background

Gold Star Family plates are issued to immediate family members of U.S. service members killed in the line of duty. In Wisconsin, the plates have long served as a visible recognition of that sacrifice. The option to personalize them โ€” choosing a custom letter-and-number combination โ€” adds another layer to that recognition, letting families display something meaningful rather than a randomly assigned sequence.

Until now, personalization came with an added cost, which some families may have skipped. Removing that fee opens the option to anyone who qualifies for the plate.

How many Gold Star families in Wisconsin currently hold the plates, and how many are expected to request personalization under the new policy, has not been announced.
