Luigi Mangione’s lawyers were back in a New York City courtroom this week for a pretrial hearing in the case that has drawn an unlikely flood of public money โ $1.5 million in donations to his defense fund.
Mangione faces accusations of stalking and killing a health insurance CEO, a case that has split public opinion sharply since his arrest. Supporters have poured cash into his legal defense at a pace that few criminal defendants see outside of celebrity trials.
The defense fund
The $1.5 million figure puts the fund in unusual territory. Most defendants charged with violent crimes don’t attract that kind of financial backing โ let alone from strangers. His backers have cast him publicly as a vigilante, a framing his legal team has done nothing to discourage.
Whether the label helps or hurts him in front of a jury is a question his lawyers will need to answer before the case goes to trial. The pretrial hearing this week was a step in that process – no verdict, no plea, just the back-and-forth over evidence and procedure that shapes what a jury will eventually see.
The hearing date falls on June 15, 2026. No trial date has been announced.
