President Trump posted photos Thursday, June 12, of the Arts of War sculptures in Washington, D.C., drawing fresh attention to an ongoing regilding effort on the monumental bronze figures.
The sculptures โ twin gilded figures that flank the Memorial Bridge approach near the Lincoln Memorial โ have been undergoing restoration work. Trump’s posts didn’t include a timeline for when the regilding would wrap up.
The sculptures
The Arts of War groupings were created by sculptor Leo Friedlander and installed in the 1950s. Each pair depicts a mounted warrior and dates to the original design of the Memorial Bridge plaza. The gold leaf on the figures had deteriorated over decades before restoration work began.
WJLA reported the president’s posts on June 12. Neither the White House nor the National Park Service, which oversees the Memorial Bridge area, immediately provided a completion date for the regilding project.
