UN Peacekeeper Killed by Mortar Fire in Southeastern Lebanon

By ยท 1 month ago

One United Nations peacekeeper is dead and others are wounded after mortar fire struck UNIFIL personnel in southeastern Lebanon, the UN peacekeeping mission confirmed Wednesday, June 4.

UNIFIL โ€” the UN Interim Force in Lebanon โ€” didn’t immediately identify the nationality of the peacekeeper killed or say how many others were hurt.

Dead. Wounded. The mission released no further breakdown.

The attack comes as an Israel-Lebanon agreement remains in place but the broader ceasefire has stalled, leaving peacekeepers on the ground in an area that hasn’t fully quieted โ€” despite months of diplomatic work to hold the truce together.

UNIFIL has operated in southern Lebanon for decades, positioned along the so-called Blue Line between Lebanon and Israel. Its troops are there to monitor the ceasefire and support the Lebanese army as it deploys south. That mandate doesn’t come with much protection when mortar rounds start landing.

The mission didn’t attribute the fire to a specific armed group or say whether any accountability measures were underway as of Wednesday afternoon.
