World Cup fans are missing games after their resale tickets fall through

By ยท 2 weeks ago

They planned for months. Some saved for years. And then the ticket didn’t work.

World Cup fans holding resale tickets are discovering – sometimes at the gate โ€” that their purchases have fallen through, leaving them to either walk away from a match they’d traveled to see or hunt down a replacement on the spot, usually at a higher price and in a worse section of the stadium.

The problem cuts at something specific about this tournament. The World Cup doesn’t come around every year, and for many fans it doesn’t come around twice in a lifetime. Missing a match after already buying a ticket isn’t just an inconvenience – it’s the kind of thing people don’t forget.

The resale problem

Resale platforms have long been part of how fans get tickets to sold-out events. But the scale of the World Cup, combined with the complexity of FIFA’s ticketing rules, has made the secondary market particularly treacherous. Buyers who thought they had a seat are learning they don’t, often with little warning and limited options for recourse.

When a resale ticket falls through, the scramble usually ends one of two ways. Either the fan finds a replacement โ€” paying a premium for whatever’s still available, often in seats nowhere near where they originally planned to sit – or they don’t go at all.

Neither outcome is what they paid for.

The situation has drawn attention to how resale markets handle high-demand international events, where ticket transfers may be restricted or outright prohibited by the organizing body. FIFA has strict rules on resale, and tickets purchased through unofficial channels carry real risk of invalidation at the turnstile.

For fans who spent thousands of dollars on travel, hotels, and tickets to get to a World Cup match, learning that the ticket is no good is a different category of loss than missing a regular-season game back home.

What recourse those fans have – and whether the platforms that sold them the tickets will make them whole โ€” hasn’t been clearly resolved.
