World Cup fans holding resale tickets are discovering – sometimes at the gate — that their purchases have fallen through, leaving them to either walk away from a match they’d traveled to see or hunt down a replacement on the spot, usually at a higher price and in a worse section of the stadium.
The problem cuts at something specific about this tournament. The World Cup doesn’t come around every year, and for many fans it doesn’t come around twice in a lifetime. Missing a match after already buying a ticket isn’t just an inconvenience – it’s the kind of thing people don’t forget.
The resale problem
Resale platforms have long been part of how fans get tickets to sold-out events. But the scale of the World Cup, combined with the complexity of FIFA’s ticketing rules, has made the secondary market particularly treacherous. Buyers who thought they had a seat are learning they don’t, often with little warning and limited options for recourse.
